75p vote: Meet St Columba’s Hospice Care

Contribution is a core component of our event, with charitable giving feeding into all we do. Annually, we are proud to donate to UK military and arts charities and in celebration of our 75 anniversary, we’ve pledged an additional 75p of every 2025 ticket sold to a new charity. We need your help deciding who. Earlier this year, members of the Tattoo team were asked to put forward charities important to them. Of this list, five charities were shortlisted. St Columba’s Hospice Care is one of our shortlisted charities. Learn more about their incredible work below.

Who are St Columba’s Hospice Care and what do they do?

In a world where compassion and care can be as powerful as medical treatments, hospice care stands as a beacon of support for individuals and families facing the profound challenges of palliative and end-of-life care. St Columba’s Hospice Care has been at the heart of the local community for almost 50 years, helping people across Edinburgh and the Lothians navigate this deeply challenging time, making a lasting, meaningful impact on countless lives.

They’re committed to providing comfort, dignity and peace to patients at the end of life and this support extends to their loved ones. Their comprehensive, holistic and diverse approach is tailored to each individual, addressing not only physical needs, but also the emotional and psychological well-being of their patients and families.

As an independent charity,  St Columba’s Hospice Care faces its challenges, from depending largely on charitable activities for funding, to remaining a competitive and attractive option for healthcare professionals to work. But this challenging and unique position also affords them the autonomy to be forward thinking and innovative in their approach to care. They hold the rare status of University Hospice and through a blend of research, collaboration and determination strive to understand exactly what their service users need, and to remain at the forefront of delivering world class hospice care sharing best practices locally, nationally and internationally.

St Columba’s services are free to everyone who needs them (of all faiths and none) and include their Inpatient Unit, Hospice at Home, Care at Home, and Rehab and Wellbeing.

Support also includes an art therapy team delivering a dynamic blend of music, art and drama sessions, a registered Chaplain, spiritual care volunteers, a network of compassionate neighbour volunteers and a specialised bereavement support service for adults, families, children, and young people.

The age range of patients starts from 16 years old and their wellbeing services support babies, children, young people and adults. As a values-driven organisation grounded in compassion, respect, and dignity, St Columba’s Hospice Care empower each person to live as well as possible until they die.

Supported by 600 dedicated volunteers, St Columba’s Hospice Care are building a legacy of care and compassion across Edinburgh and the Lothians and beyond, that will span generations, creating a lasting difference and network of hope and comfort for all.
