His Majesty The King’s Guard Band and Drill Team of Norway will tell their story this August
Since their first performance at the Tattoo in 1961, His Majesty The King’s Guard of Norway has a close relationship with our event. We’re delighted to see them return this August.
Making their debut in 1961, His Majesty The King’s Guard Band and Drill Team of Norway (Hans Majestet Kongens Garde) will join our Stories cast for their 11th performance at our Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo event. The popular group, showcase Norwegian tradition, precision drill and expert musicianship. This year, the King’s Guard comprises of the 3rd Guard Company in His Majesty the King’s Guard battalion, part of the Norwegian Army. Day to day, the battalion is tasked with protecting the Royal residences, and are on stand-by to support local authorities to defend Oslo and the public in times of crisis.
At our Stories Show, the group will dedicate their performance to King Olav V of Norway. Using traditional Norwegian music inspired by the Norwegian violin they will tell the story of their origins and their lasting relationships with their allies in Scotland.
In addition to our event, the group also has a longstanding relationship with Edinburgh Zoo. In 1972, The King’s Guard visited the Zoo to adopt one of the penguins. The Emperor Penguin chosen was named Nils Olav after the Guard’s commander, Major Nils Egelien and His Majesty King Olav. The current penguin, Sir Nils Olav is now Brigadier General and Baron of the Bouvet Islands. This decorated mascot receives honors and distinction whenever the King’s Guard visits The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
In addition to promotions, Sir Nils and his fellow penguins receive a festive gift of herrings every Christmas from The King’s Guard.
As tradition dictates, the group will visit Edinburgh Zoo again this year. Keep an eye on the Tattoo channels for more on this in August.
